Pina colada is a sweet rum-based cocktail made by mixing rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, and usually served either blended with ice. And will be more interesting if you garnished with pineapple slices, maraschino cherries or both. Pina colada has become the official beverage of Puerto Rico since 1978

Pina colada was introduced on August 16, 1954 at the Beachcomber Bar Caribe Hilton in San Juan, Puerto Rico by its creators expected, Ramón "Monchito" Marrero. Apparently, the hotel management has expressly requested Monchito for a new signature drink mix that will please the demanding tastes of the star-studded client. Monchito accept the challenge, and after three months of intense mixing, shaking and experimenting, the first born Pina colada. 
The story is more credible because it contains coconut cream pina colada as one of the main ingredients (which is the precursor) was created in 1954 at the University of Puerto Rico by Ramón López Irizarry. This story was confirmed by José L. Díaz de Villegas in his book Puerto Rico La Gran Cocina Del Caribe
Mr Ramón Marrero, created using the Don Q rum drinks. Having spent months perfecting the recipe, Mr. Marrero to create and sell the first Pina Colada on August 15, 1954, while working as a bartender at the Caribe Hilton International Hotel, the most popular hotels in Puerto Rico between the 1950s. 

Mr. Marrero then received numerous awards and recognition for his creation. Notably, in 1978, Mr. Marrero presented with an award for selling three million Pina Colada by Coco Lopez coconut cream maker is used in drinks. On the same day, the government said Pina colada become the official beverage of Puerto Rico.
